City
words: Robert Campbell
music: Robert Campbell & Mike Sheppard
images: Robert Campbell

And now
While the city dreamers sleep
I walk the dark road to the river
The streets are empty now
The night died long ago
But the hunger lasts forever

The lights of Main Street
Cast shadows on the park
And cut through the cold nights of winter
I pass the hotels, pass the church and the station
As I walk the dark road to the river

City, city
The city sings the saddest song you'll ever hear
City, city
Is there anybody there?

And now
While the city dreamers sleep
I pass by the school on the corner
Forgotten memories wait in every street
As I walk the dark road to the river

City, city
The city sings the saddest song you'll ever hear
City, city
Is there anybody there?

The city sings the saddest song you'll ever hear
City, city
Is there anybody there?
Is there anybody there?
Is there anybody there?

II had written a much slower version of this song but Mike suggested changing the chorus and making the whole feel more upbeat. Not easy with a song about someone going to throw themselves off a bridge into a river but even so - the upbeat feel worked. The photos of the river were taken immediately after Mike's memorial service, crossing the Thames.
